Loads of you out there have been asking about my recent change to Canon from Nikon, so I thought I might just put it down in words.
And before I start I just want to say this is not a dig at Nikon at all, for the past 5 year I have shot with Nikon and its been amazing, matter of fact I still love Nikon gear I just needed a change.
Photography to me is way more than what brand you choose to shoot with or what lenses make a difference. Let’s face it a camera is a camera and when you are comparing top end bodies and lenses they are all good. Yes there are things that each individual may like better with a different brand but who cares, photography to me is more about shooting good images then worrying about gear. Nikon, Canon, Sony etc all make great product, it goes down to personal preference and what works best for you.
Now for the tricky part, wording this so that I don’t offend half the planet! Hahaha. Ok so as I said I needed a change. Moving across to Canon is probably one of the biggest operations/Decisions I have had to make in a long time. Selling all my Nikon gear in order to purchase the equivalent in Canon is no easy task, I can tell you that much! I walked into Camertek in Umhlanga the other day and Brenda immediately told me to stop stressing, she could see it in my face. Selling everything you have worked so hard for, as Jess would say I’m married to my gear, was not easy to do!
There is a lot of speculation out there as to why I changed to Canon and if it’s been the right decision. When I dropped the news that I was changing over, two things happened, people congratulated me and then people criticized me. I got Facebook messages, phone calls and even sms’s telling me how I have made the biggest mistake of my career, mostly from people I don’t really know and have never even met before. Did it affect me……..NO, have I made the right decision…..in my opinion YES. You see photography is so opinionated and subjective that I believe there is no right or wrong. The choices you make will only ever affect you and your career. But I don’t want to open a can of worms here so im going to move onto why I changed over.
Before the Canon 1Dx and 5D mk3 I never really considered Canon as a brand I would shoot with. At the time Nikon was know as the noise machines, shooting at ridiculously high ISO’s was never a worry. Most of my work is in low light and challenging conditions and at the time I felt Nikon had the best gear for the job, from over all image quality to high ISO noise performance. A year later Canon brought out the 1Dx and 5D mk3, When they launched them I had a look online but it was only when I had the opportunity of using the gear that my mind changed. I then began exploring the idea of changing over and how this could ever transpire.
I now had to get my hands on these two bodies, a few lenses and put them to the test and was I surprised wow. I managed to get a 1Dx, 5D mk3, 16-35mm F2.8, 70-200mm F2.8 and a 200-400mm with built in 1.4 converter, I had two weeks with the gear and really put it through its stops. I pushed the gear to its limits, shooting various different subjects but keeping my main focus on tracking, speed and high ISO performance, things I rely on as a photographer.
My 2 weeks were up and as I handed all the gear back I put my Nikon gear up for sale and that was that, I was changing to Canon. Both camera bodies are amazing, focus, speed and high ISO performance. Another one that stood out for me was the 200-400mm with built in 1.4 converter, one of the most phenomenal and versatile muti purpose lenses I have used to date.
As an International Professional Photographer one needs to make tough business decisions along the way and if it means changing to Canon because they have something that can benefit my business and their after sales service is unbelievably amazing then that’s what I need to do.
As most of you out there know Camertek’s service was a huge draw card for me. John and Brenda at Cameratek, Umhlanga are some of the most genuine people I know, going above and beyond to make sure you are always looked after. I take my hat off to you both!
Life is about choices, you cant make a difference until you make a decision.
Change is not easy, if it was everyone would do it.
My purpose in life is to go out there shoot images and inspire change, whether it be helping someone achieve their creative potential or simply guiding their vision in the right direction.
I changed to Canon because I believe their gear and service can help me achieve my purpose, my goals and ultimately make my dreams possible.
It’s been a few months now that I have been shooting with Canon and I can 100% say that this was a good decision for me. In the next 4 days I will be jumping on a plane and enjoying a 17 hour flight before I land and make dreams a reality! Not going to say where im going yet but, watch this space…
